Social Media Content Creator

Te Tāwharau o Te Whakatōhea | Part-time

Te āheinga - The opportunity:

We are seeking a creative, culturally grounded and digitally savvy Social Media Content Creator to join our Communications team on a permanent part‑time basis.

 

Reporting to the Communications Manager, this hands‑on, mobile‑first role is responsible for capturing, creating and publishing engaging digital content across our social media platforms. You will be active within the organisation and the community, capturing real‑time kaupapa, events, pānui and whānau stories that reflect the voice, values and identity of Whakatōhea.

 

This role supports the delivery of the communications and marketing calendar, contributes to campaigns and key initiatives, and helps build strong, positive engagement with whānau, hapū and iwi through consistent, high‑quality digital storytelling.

 

Ngā Kawenga me ngā Mahi – Duties & responsibilities:

  • Create engaging short‑form digital content including reels, video, photography, posts and stories for social media platforms.

  • Capture kaupapa, events, announcements and whānau stories in a way that reflects tikanga, authenticity and iwi voice.

  • Manage day‑to‑day posting, moderation and audience engagement across all social media channels.

  • Attend organisational and community events to capture and publish content in real time.

  • Support communications campaigns, pānui and key initiatives in line with the marketing calendar.

  • Work closely with the Communications Manager and Creative Designer to ensure cohesive storytelling and brand consistency.

  • Monitor social media analytics and provide insights to support continuous improvement.

  • Maintain organised digital asset libraries and ensure all media consent forms are obtained and filed appropriately.

  • Ensure all content meets accessibility, brand, cultural and quality standards, including accurate use of te reo Māori.

  • Ability to work flexibly, including some evenings and weekends to attend events and activations.

 

Ngā wheako me ngā pūkenga - Experience & Skills required:

  • Relevant qualification in Communications, Media, Marketing, Digital Media, or a related field.

  • 2+ years’ experience working within Te Ao Māori contexts, Kaupapa Māori organisations, or iwi-based communications.

  • Experience creating and managing content across multiple social media platforms with consistent posting schedules.

  • Strong mobile‑first content creation skills including filming, editing and posting.

  • Proficiency with content creation tools such as Adobe Suite, Canva, or equivalent.

  • Excellent storytelling, writing, and editing skills with high attention to detail.

  • Ability to manage multiple content streams, tight timeframes and on‑the‑ground content capture.

  • Understanding social media analytics and platform‑specific best practices in line with organisational systems and legislative requirements.

  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

  • Fluency in both English and te reo Māori (verbal and written) is required.

  • Strong whānau, hapū and iwi connections and confidence engaging within community settings.
