Mātauranga me ngā Rauemi

Marae Kai Wars 2024 - What a Feast

As we reflect, reset and reconnect this Matariki season, we also celebrate a kaupapa that brought us together in the most delicious and meaningful way — Marae Kai Wars 2024.

This kaupapa wasn’t just about the kai.

It was about the kōrero around the table, the laughter in the whare, the mātauranga passed from kaumātua to mokopuna, and the deep hononga to our taiao.

“Ko te kai e whakatau i te wairua, ko te kai e hoki i ngā mahara, ko te kai e whakanoa, ko te kai e whakawhanaunga ai i a tātou katoa.”

From pipi gathering at Waiotahe, diving for kuku at Ōpape, to preparing hākari with aroha in the marae kitchens – every rōpū gave their all. The judges were served culinary excellence, but what truly stole the show was the wairua – the warmth of the people, the stories of the whenua, and the legacy of mātauranga Māori in action.

“Whakakao kai and reo, tikanga Māori, te ao Māori definitely alive for our tamariki.”

To all the marae who took part – he mihi nunui.

You didn’t just showcase your skills – you shared your hearts, your whānau, and your whakapapa.

Congratulations Maromahue Marae - Ūpokorehe!

You took out the title for Marae Kai Wars 2024, and what a journey it’s been. Your kai, creativity, and connection blew us all away. From taiao to tāpu – every element of your presentation honoured who you are and where you come from.

Ka mau te wehi!
