Te Aho Mātauranga serves as the overarching iwi-led education system and engagement platform that connects learners, whānau, education providers, community organisations, and support services. It provides coordination, advocacy, and culturally grounded guidance that assists whānau to navigate education pathways and access opportunities that support success across all stages of learning. 

 

The initiative is designed to create a connected education ecosystem that strengthens attendance, participation, achievement, and transitions for tamariki, rangatahi, and whānau. Through strong relationships, community engagement, 

and integrated support, Te Aho Mātauranga contributes to the long-term educational aspirations and aspirations of Whakatōhea. 

Te Uru Kahika

Te Uru Kahika provides rangatahi with opportunities to participate in place-based, iwi-led learning experiences that strengthen cultural identity, personal development, leadership, and wellbeing. The programme connects rangatahi to their environment, whakapapa, and community through activities that promote environmental stewardship, cultural learning, and active participation in community initiatives. 
 

Grounded in kaupapa Māori values, Te Uru Kahika supports rangatahi to build confidence, resilience, and life skills while exploring future education, employment, and leadership pathways. The programme recognises the importance of identity and belonging as foundations for long-term success and wellbeing.

Tohe Rauariki

Tohe Rauariki is focused on improving educational outcomes for ākonga Māori through targeted literacy, numeracy, and academic support. The programme works alongside learners and whānau to strengthen engagement, attendance, learning confidence, and achievement, helping learners overcome barriers and experience success in education.

Using culturally responsive approaches, Tohe Rauariki provides tailored teaching and learning support that aligns with the aspirations of learners and their whānau. The programme aims to create stronger educational pathways, increased participation, and positive long-term outcomes for Māori learners. 

 

Initial Teacher Education Workforce Support Programme

The IWMSP initiative supports Whakatōhea uri pursuing Initial Teacher Education (ITE) qualifications within Māori-medium education settings. Through financial assistance, pastoral support, and ongoing encouragement, the initiative enables participants to successfully complete their teacher training and contribute to the future of Māori-medium education.

Progressive Scholarships: Successful applicants will receive support with the payment of tuition fees and course related costs | Max 3 per year.

Bursary Support – Flexible financial assistance for tauira facing additional barriers |Case by case basis.

The initiative has a long-term focus on strengthening educational outcomes within the rohe by growing a sustainable workforce of qualified kaiako who can support future generations of learners. By investing in local talent, IWMSP contributes directly to the development of culturally grounded educational leadership and teaching capability.
