Mental Health Support Worker

Te Pou Oranga Whaiora | Full-time

Te āheinga - The opportunity:

Reporting to the Social and Health Group Manager, the Mental Health Support Worker will provide peer support, advocacy, case management, and wellbeing-focused services to adults and their whānau affected by mental health and addiction challenges. You will walk alongside individuals to support them to live well in the presence or absence of mental illness using a culturally grounded, values-based approach. This role is integral to supporting whānau to build resilience, strengthen connections, and access the right services at the right time.

 

Ngā Kawenga me ngā Mahi – Duties & responsibilities:

  • Provide whānau support services for individuals and whānau experiencing mental health and addiction issues.

  • Deliver effective case management including assessment, PAE ORA planning, risk/safety planning, discharge planning, reviews, and evaluations.

  • Respond to referrals in a timely manner and maintain regular face-to-face contact.

  • Facilitate advocacy, intake relief, whānau noho, whānau hui, and integrated support with internal and external providers.

  • Support whānau with programmes, group work, counselling/therapy, and planned respite.

  • Assist with medication monitoring, medication reviews with GPs and psychiatrists, and physical health checks.

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in client databases (Ara Whanui).

  • Uphold high standards of quality, safe practice, adherence to policy and demonstrating TToTW’s vision, purpose, and values.

 

Ngā wheako me ngā pūkenga - Experience & Skills required:

  • Minimum of, or working towards, the National Mental Health Certificate.

  • Experience working with Māori whānau and in the Ōpōtiki community.

  • Advocacy experience and ability to support whānau in mental health/addiction contexts.

  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office, Outlook, and client databases.

  • Effective written and oral communication skills.

  • A flexible, can‑do attitude with strong planning, organising, and time management skills.

  • Experience planning, coordinating, or supporting volunteer or community programmes.

  • Sound understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and ability to apply te reo me ōna tikanga o Whakatōhea.

  • Strong relationship management skills and ability to work collaboratively across teams.

  • A full driver's license is required.
