Whakamārama:
This design uses a custom typeface created by Mihitaina Riesterer early last year, inspired by the concept of herekore. Each letter is made up of small dots that shrink outward, resembling whetū — a natural fit for Matariki.

Flipping the design over itself represents the turning of the year, a time of reflection and renewal. It also connects to timatanga — the start of preparing the soil for new crops. This idea came after a kōrero between Mihitaina and her Pāpā who remembers this as an important time for turning the soil, marking the beginning of the planting season.

​​​​​​​The earthy browns/blacks and deep blues tie it all together, reflecting the whenua, night sky, and moana seen from Ōmarumutu.
