The maintenance and the evolvement of Te Reo
Tohekura is a wānanga reo programme that is held over a period of four days from Friday, 31st May to Monday, 3rd June 2024.
Tohekura is for all levels of competency in Te Reo, from beginners to advanced; we encourage you to register regardless of your level of fluency in Te Reo, as all needs will be catered for.
KI TE WHAKAKŌRERO
I TE IWI
To ensure our language is spoken by our people using proverbs, identity, and genealogy
Registrations closed.
Accommodation will be available at the marae,
all meals will be provided.
Learning will take place at Waiaua Marae.
The kura reo is for Whakatōhea descent and strongly affiliated with the Iwi.
Pōhiri is at (TBC)
All tauira are expected to attend the pōhiri.
Tohekura has four learning levels.
TOHEITI
The new learners of the language set the foundation to plant their seed in the ground. They need soil containing nutrients, water and sunlight in order for the seed to grow. They are named Toheiti.
TOHEKĪ
The Tohekī are the nurturers of the growing saplings.
They are continuously sourcing nourishment to encourage flourishing foliage.
TOHEMATA
Tohemata are our keepers of the seed. Their job is to ensure growth flourishes in the heart, soul and mind. Tohemata is well nourished so the branches grow vigorously.
TOHETOA
After caring for this tree its arms stretch wide and far in full bloom which makes this level the most experienced in both speaking the language and customs. This level named Tohetoa!
