Whakatōhea

Whakatōhea trace our descent from the Nukutere and Mātaatua waka. Our ancestral lines are traced back to two ancestors - Tutāmure and Muriwai. The following is an outline of Whakatōhea History, based on traditional stories and historical documents. Further information about our history can be found on the "Our People" page, or click here.

LATEST NEWS - WHAT'S HAPPENING IN WHAKATŌHEA

WAKA AMA CHAMPS
Neat alright the combined WISH and WMTB waka ama team who successfully made it through qualifying rounds to go head to head against the Whakatane Police team in the Commnuity Event. Now they plan to dominate the iwi challenge to be held later on in the year. Kia kaha koutou!!!

CONGRATULATIONS TO WHAKATOHEA IWI SOCIAL & HEALTH SERVICES STAFF          

Charlotte Henry-Williams has recently become a fully registerd Social Worker with the Social Workers Registration Board. Charlotte has a Bachelor in Social Work (Biculturalism in Practice). Also, Hiria Allison has gained her provisional Registration in Social Work. Nga mihi nui kia korua!

KA MAU TE WEHI, THOMAS TAWHIRI

Education Group Manager, Thomas Tawhiri, competed in the Takapuna Beach Cup Regatta over the weekend. As part of the masters team he secured the Bronze medal - Congratulations e hoa!

EDUCATION GRANTS 

Applications for education grants are now open. Whakatōhea studying at tertiary level are welcome to apply for an education grant from the Whakatōhea Māori Trust Board. Grants are being offered to students studying at degree, postgraduate, and masters levels in the areas of education, social and health sciences, economics and marine biology. Applicaiton forms can be downloaded from the bottom of this page.

BUSINESS AND FISHERIES SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE                  

Te Pūtea Whakatupu Trust are offering Business and Fisheries Scholarships for those students studting in these areas. They have 30 x $10,000 Business Scholarships and 10 x $10,000 Fisheries Scholarships available. If you would like to find out more, or pick up application forms visit www.tpwt.maori.nz
