Ngai Tamahaua are located on the eastern boundary of Whakatōhea at Opape, about 15km east of Ōpōtiki. Opape beach is a popular launching site for recreational fishers throughout the district.

Ngāti Ruatākena is located on the eastern boundaries of Whakatōhea at Omarumutu.  Home to one of Te Whakatōhea's prominent tipuna Tutāmure.

Ngāti Ngāhere

Ngāti Irapuaia

Kō Ngāti Irapuaia te hapū

Ngāti Irapuaia are located at the entrance to the Waioweka Gorge. Their tribal lands extend into the gorge interior which is a rich source of traditional kai including wild pig, deer, kereru and trout.

Ngāti Patumoana

Kō Ngāti Pautmoana te hapū

Originally located at Paerata, Ngāti Patumoana were relocated to the base of the Pakihi valley after the Whakatōhea land confiscations. The hapū derives its name from an event where their ancestor, Hineiahua was pursued and killed by a Ngā Puhi war party at the mouth of the Waiotahe River mouth - hence the name Ngāti Patumoana.

Located on the shores of the Ohiwa harbour, Roimata marae is the western most marae in the rohe of Whakatōhea.                                                                      

Kutarere

Kutarere sits on the western boundary of Whaktōhea. One of three marae within Upokorehe, Kutarere is nestled within close proximity to the Ohiwa Harbour and the Waiotahe and Waimana Valleys.

 Maromahue

Located at the mouth of the Waiotahe Valley, Maromahue marae sits within the traditional passageway that Tūhoe used to access the Ohiwa harbour from Te Uruwera.
