Education & Training

Welcome to the Whakatōhea Education & Training Unit

We respond to a broad range of stakeholder training and employment needs by offering four programmes which cover four industries. We provide quality education and training for rural learners at the main St John Street Opotiki campus, as well as three other local training sites,   in addition to our two outreaches at Wairuru Marae (Raukokore) and the Sports & Culture Pavilion (Te Teko).  The Raukokore and Te Teko Outreaches have been inspected and approved by Te Wananga o  Aotearoa to operate Toi Paematua Raranga.

The Whakatōhea Māori Trust Board Education & Training Unit is fully funded by the Tertiary Education Commission to deliver the following NZQA accredited programmes:

  • National Certificate in Hospitality level 1
  • National Certificate in Business Administration and Computing level 2
  • National Certificate in Computing level 2
  • National Certificate in Computing Level 3

Aside from the above and in conjunction with TWOA under an MOU, we offer the following programmes:

HIPPY Programme

HIPPY is a home based programme that supports parents in becoming actively involved in their childrens learning. Children begin HIPPY between 3 1/2 and 4 1/2 years of age. Parents and children work together at home on activities and resources supplied by HIPPY. The programme complements what children can gain from attending other pre-school programmes, and assists with their transition to school.
